Serval

Lifestyle

Servals are solitary animals but tend to rest in groups. They enjoy the water and often include bodies of water in their home ranges.

Food

Servals are excellent hunters, often using patience and their keen sense of hearing to pounce on prey. Servals must eat fast to prevent losing their catch to larger predatory animals.

Life Cycle

Servals live anywhere from 18 to 20 years in the wild and have a year-round mating season. The gestation period lasts about 80 days and produces anywhere from two to five kittens. The kittens remain with the female until they are about a year old and are big enough to hunt on their own.

Population & Treats

Although the serval is not considered vulnerable, predators and habitat loss are current threats.

Range

Found in southern parts of the Sahara Desert.
