Jaguars

Lifestyle

Jaguars are solitary animals and spend most of their time resting in trees or in pursuit of prey. Males are territorial and will allow their home range to overlap with other females' but will fiercely protect their turf from other males. They use scratch marks, urine and growling vocalizations to mark their territory.

Food

Jaguars are carnivores and stalk and ambush their prey at night. They have a very strong jaw, allowing them to eat caimans and hard-shelled reptiles like turtles.

Life Cycle

They can live 12 to 15 years in the wild and up to 20 in captivity. Females have a three- to 3.5-month gestation period and will usually birth a litter averaging two cubs weighing anywhere from 1.5 to 2 pounds.

Population & Treats

Residing at the top of the food chain, leopards have few predators other than humans who hunt them for their coats.

Range

North, Central and South America.
