Badgers

Lifestyle

There are eight species of badgers that split into three badger subfamilies: European, Asian and American badgers. They have varied lifestyles, but they all shelter underground in burrows called setts, which can be mazelike and expansive. They may be solitary or form clans as large as 15 individuals.

Food

They are omnivores and can devour several hundred earthworms or grubs a day. They also eat nuts, fruits and bulbs and are one of the few animals that can eat hedgehogs.

Life Cycle

Can live from four to 10 years in the wild. Mating season happens in the spring, but badgers can mate throughout the year.

Population & Treats

Eagles, wildcats and humans are all threats to the badger. But with their long claws and strong teeth, badgers can fight off predators much larger than themselves.

Range

They can be found in much of North America, Europe, Japan and China.
